Here I started to cut the top of the transom off.

I was surprised as to how
deep the fiberglass was along the top of the transom, it was about 1 1/4 inch
thick.

Here is a pic from the inside
of the boat. The depth of the fiberglass is 1 1/4 inches. Interestingly, the
depth to the top of the engine bolt is only 1 1/2 inches. There is only a 1/4
inch of wood from the top of
the bolt to the top of the transom wood.

I started opening the transom
by using a chisel and putty knife to lift the top skin from the filler inside.
Next I cut the top skin using a reciprocating saw. Next, I used a chisel and
putty knife to separate the
inner skin and outer skin from the filler. Once that was done, I began chiseling
out the filler. The picture
below is about halfway done. The layout of the transom is skin, filler, fiberglass,
then wood. It was quite
a bit of work at this point to clean out the filler.
